When Crimestoppers started 15 years ago in the UK, mobile phones were a relatively new invention. Now the majority of us have one and rely heavily on them.Crimestoppers can accept calls from mobile phones anonymously.
You should be aware however that not all mobile networks provide this service for free – your provider should alert you to this. The number will also appear in your ‘call register’ on your phone and may also appear on your bill. Both of which may indicate to someone that you contacted Crimestoppers.
Mobile phones have other technology besides calls. Crimestoppers does not accept text messages or photos taken by your phone. Unfortunately we cannot deal with it and valuable information may be lost should you try.
This is because we are not satisfied yet that we can yet receive useful information in these ways which does not reveal your identity. We refuse to compromise the anonymity of the Crimestoppers scheme.
Crimestoppers are however working hard to overcome the risks in our way to providing a truly accessible service. We have recognised that we are all increasingly using mobile phone technology. In 1999 1.9 billion text messages were sent; the forecast for 2004 is 23 billion. We will keep you up to date on any advance in this area
